Per Shams Charania, The Los Angeles Clippers and 11-time All-Star James Harden are working through whether the sides can find a deal ahead of Thursday’s NBA trade deadline, sources told ESPN. Conversations have remained aligned between Harden, the Clippers and multiple interested teams as all parties evaluate potential paths forward.
One of those teams is the Cleveland Cavaliers. Late Monday, league sources confirmed that Los Angeles and Cleveland held discussions on a framework involving Harden and guard Darius Garland, signaling that both organizations are at least open to significant roster changes with the deadline rapidly approaching.
Harden’s name being at the center of deadline talks is nothing new, but his résumé still commands attention. Across 16 NBA seasons, Harden has never missed the playoffs, logging 16 consecutive postseason appearances; the longest active streak in the league. His playoff journey spans nearly every phase of his career, with three appearances in Oklahoma City, eight in Houston, one in Brooklyn, two in Philadelphia and two with the Clippers.
What continues to define the conversation around Harden is not a lack of production or availability, but the absence of a championship. He owns an 87–79 career playoff record and has consistently helped teams reach the postseason, yet a title has remained elusive despite MVP-level seasons and multiple runs with legitimate contenders.
For the Clippers, the decision comes at a critical point. After acquiring Harden in October 2023 with championship aspirations alongside Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, Los Angeles must now determine whether the current roster can realistically reach that level or if a retooling is necessary. A deal involving Garland would provide a younger, dynamic guard who could help stabilize the franchise moving forward.
From Cleveland’s perspective, Harden represents a proven postseason engine who could immediately raise the team’s ceiling. The Cavaliers have searched for a steady, experienced creator capable of navigating playoff defenses, and Harden’s track record even without a ring fits that profile.
With the deadline looming, Harden’s future may once again come down to timing, fit and opportunity. His streak of playoff appearances remains intact, but the pursuit of the one achievement missing from his Hall of Fame résumé could soon depend on another change of scenery.
