In a stunning deadline-week move, the Memphis Grizzlies have traded two-time All-Star forward Jaren Jackson Jr.to the Utah Jazz as part of a seven-player package, sources told ESPN. Memphis also sent John Konchar, Jock Landale and Vince Williams Jr. to Utah, receiving Walter Clayton Jr., Kyle Anderson, Taylor Hendricks, Georges Niang, and three future first-round picks in return.
Jackson, 26, a former NBA Defensive Player of the Year and one of the Grizzlies’ longest-tenured stars, departs as Memphis pivots into full rebuild mode with an eye on the future. The Jazz are betting Jackson’s two-way impact — averaging 19.2 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1.5 blocks this season — can help accelerate their climb in a competitive Western Conference. (ESPN.com)
For Memphis, the haul instantly swells its asset pool, adding young pieces centered around Cedric Coward and Zach Edey along wit three first-round picks that push the franchise’s projected total into the high teens over the next seven seasons, a massive currency for a long-term rebuild. With a young core featuring Cedric Coward (22), Zach Edey (23), Jaylen Wells (22), Walter Clayton Jr. (22), Taylor Hendricks (22) and GG Jackson (21), the Grizzlies are clearly turning the page, prioritizing future upside over present stability.
On Utah’s side, the acquisition pairs Jackson with Lauri Markkanen and Keyonte George and budding star Ace Bailey, creating a versatile frontcourt that could reshape the Jazz’s trajectory. At 15-35, Utah has been on the rise, and adding an All-Star defender and scorer gives them a punch-up piece for contention talks.
Memphis will remain active up to the 3 p.m. ET trade deadline, but this deal signals a seismic shift for the franchise: out with yesterday’s core, in with draft capital, young talent and a new roadmap forward.
